A perennial plant of the Papaveraceae family, native to China. It is cultivated in gardens and other places for decorative purposes. The stem is about 60 cm tall and is whitish green overall. The leaves are alternate and pinnately lobed, with roughly sawtoothed edges on the lobes. In April, several flowers bloom in a raceme at the end of the stem. The upper part of the inflorescence curves into an arch. The flowers hang down on short stalks and are beautiful red. There are two sepals, but they fall off before they bloom. There are four petals, two on the outside and two on the inside, with the two on the inside fused together. It is so named because the way the flowers are arranged resembles a garland of flowers used to decorate before Buddhist altars. This family also includes the famous alpine plant, Dicentra persica.
