Magoshi Kyohei

Businessman. Born in Kinoko Village, Bitchu Province (Shitsuki County, Okayama Prefecture) as the second son of a doctor, Motoizumi. After studying at Kojokan, he went to Osaka and became an apprentice at Konoike, but was soon asked to be adopted by Harimaya Nihei (Kujiyado). He met and was inspired by Masuda Takashi, so he left his foster home and moved to Tokyo to join Senshu Kaisha. His business acumen was also recognized at Mitsui & Co., Ltd., and he was promoted to the company's general manager in 1892 (Meiji 25). In 1896, he left the company and became president of Nippon Beer, where he worked hard to rebuild the company. In 1906 (Meiji 39), he realised the merger of three breweries in Japan, Sapporo and Osaka, and became the first president of the newly established Dai Nippon Breweries. He was called the "King of Beer in Japan." He served as an executive officer of over 100 companies, including the Imperial Bank of Japan and Fuji Gas Spinning Co.
