Yojibei Araki

Japanese: 荒木与次兵衛 - あらきよじべえ

Kabuki actor. The first generation's birth and death dates are unknown, but he is known to have lived until 1707 (4th year of the Hoei era). He played leading roles. His father was the Dogegata Saito Yogoro. He was one of the leading actors in the Kyoto and Osaka theater scene from the Enpo to Genroku eras, developing the Horie style of theater and serving as a zamoto for many years. He excelled in martial arts plays, and excelled in hand-wounded plays, swordplay, real plays, and rhythmic plays, but his nude and yakuza roles were unpopular. He was considered old-fashioned during the Genroku era. His hit roles included "Hinin Takiuki." There were five generations of the family up until the Horeki era, but none of them were great actors, only those who inherited stage names.

歌舞伎俳優。初世は生没年不詳だが1707年(宝永4)までは生存を確認できる。立役。父は道外方（どうけがた）斎藤与五郎。延宝から元禄にかけて京坂劇壇を代表する役者の一人で，堀江芝居を開発し，長く座本も勤めた。武道事を得意とし，手負事，太刀打，実事，拍子事にすぐれていたが，濡れ事，やつし事は不評であった。元禄期には古風とされる。当り役は《非人敵討》など。その後，宝暦期まで5世を数えるが，名跡をついだのみで，名優はいない。
