A volcanic island in the southwest Pacific Ocean, in the center of the Solomon Islands. It has an area of 3,800 km2 and a population of 22,000 (1996). It was discovered in 1567 by the Spaniard Mendaña. It is a long, mountainous island, 145 km long and 30 km wide at its widest point, and is surrounded by many small islands. The settlements are on the coast, and copra production is thriving on the leeward northeast coast. It produces timber and nickel, but these are of little value.
