…They are also written as 蠕蠕 (Zenzen), 晓晓 (Jiyojiyo), and 抮抮 (Zeizei), and are said to be of Mongolian origin. The core tribe, the Ikukiyuuri tribe, originally belonged to the Xianbei Tuoba tribe, but in the 4th century they escaped from their control, adopted the name Rouran, and took control of Inner Mongolia when the Tuoba tribe established the North China state. In 402, Shelun (?-410) took control of almost all of North Asia and called himself "Qiu Dou Bo Kahan." After that, he controlled the East-West trade route and oppressed the Northern Wei, but in 552 he was defeated by the Turks and scattered, and in 554 he was completely destroyed. …
