A state in which electrodes in a gas are bridged by a discharge path. The form of discharge at this time corresponds to a spark discharge. The same term may be used in liquids. The word "flashover" was used in the past, but when the character "閃" was removed from the list of kanji used in common use, the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan wrote the English word "flashover" in this way and adopted it as the official term, and since then it has been widely used as a technical term in Japan. The voltage at which a flashover occurs is called the flashover voltage (often abbreviated as FOV), and the probability of a flashover occurring when a constant voltage is applied is called the flashover rate.
