Born in Leipzig, he studied philosophy at the University of Leipzig, mathematics at the University of Jena, and law at the University of Altdorf. After meeting Johann Christian von Boyneburg (1622-72), former chancellor of the Principality of Mainz, he became the principality's legal adviser in 1670. He stayed in Paris from 1672 onwards as a diplomatic envoy for the principality, and his direct purpose in Paris was to present to Louis XIV the Egyptian Plan, which he himself had drafted (a policy of French expansion, particularly to prevent the invasion of the Netherlands and to encourage the conquest of Egypt, thereby ensuring the security of Germany). …
