Born January 27, 1826 in Tver Died: May 10, 1889. Petersburg. Russian satirist. His real name was Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov. Born into an old noble family, he witnessed the despotism of the old family and the tyranny of the landlords from his childhood. He graduated from the Tsarskoye Selo academy (Ritsey) and entered the civil service. His political views were nurtured by his association with M. Petrashevsky and his interest in French utopian socialism, especially C. Fourier. His first novels, Protivorechiya (1847) and Zaputannoe delo (48), were condemned by the authorities and he was exiled to Vyatka. After his release in 1856, he compiled his impressions of his time in exile in Gubernskie ocherki (57), satirizing bureaucracy. He later participated in the editing of the magazines Contemporaries and Records of the Fatherland, and became a central member of the revolutionary democratic movement. His other works include Istoriya Odnogo Goroda (History of a City) (70), The Golovlëv Family (Gospoda Golovlëvy) (76) and Poshekhonskaya Starina (Old Customs of a Remote Place) (89).
