A monk and sculptor from the early Edo period. Born in Ise (Mie Prefecture), his surname was Yamada and he was also known as Hozan-Rishi. He became a monk at the age of 18 and travelled around the country while continuing his rigorous training. After following in the footsteps of En no Gyoja, he entered Mt. Ikoma in Yamato (Nara Prefecture). After undergoing ascetic practices at the Hannyakutsu Cave, he re-founded Hozan-ji Temple in 1678 (Enpo 6). He aspired to create Buddha statues from a young age, and together with his disciple Ryukei (1659-1732), he left behind works that exude the intense spirit born from fervent faith, completely different from the stagnant professional Buddhist sculptors of the time. In particular, there are many works of wrathful forms such as the statue of Acala, and the most famous are the Five Great Kings and the Acala Five Deities at Hosan-ji Temple, the Saien Hall of Horyuji Temple, and the Acala statues at Toshodai-ji Temple.
