A town in Soo County in eastern Kagoshima Prefecture. It faces Shibushi Bay. The Shirasu Plateau town of Futsuhara was opened to the public after 1892, and together with Noikurahara in Ariake Town (now Shibushi City) to the east, it became a pioneering area for rice paddy development on the Osumi Peninsula. The town produces rice, mandarin oranges and other fruits, tea, and also raises livestock. The coast of Shibushi Bay is part of the Nichinan Coast Quasi-National Park. 鹿児島県東部,曾於(そお)郡の町。志布志(しぶし)湾に臨む。シラス台地の蓬原(ふつはら)は1892年以後開田,東隣の有明町(現・志布志市)の野井倉原とともに大隅半島の水田開発先進地となった。米,ミカンなどの果樹,茶を産し,畜産も営む。志布志湾岸は日南海岸国定公園の一部。東九州自動車道が通じる。100.67km2。1万4215人(2010)。
