An evergreen fern of the Brackenaceae family, also known as Hakonesou or Ichoshinobu. It is found in warm areas of Japan, southern Korea, Taiwan, and mainland China. It grows on the ground or on rocks in mountainous areas where it is not too shady. The rhizomes are short and creeping or ascending, and are densely covered with thin black-brown scales along with the base of the petiole. The leaves are pinnately compound, reaching a length of about 40 cm, with the blade pinnately divided 3 to 4 times and the lobes inverted triangular ovate. The petioles are long and shiny, purple-brown or reddish-brown. Usually only one sporangium is produced at the tip of the pinnae. The spores are tetrahedral.
