[Born] 1598? Milan Died November 30, 1647 / December 3, 1647. Italian mathematician from Bologna. Became a Jesuit monk at a young age. He became interested in mathematics after reading a copy of Euclid's "Urus", and began his research in mathematics. In 1629, he became a professor at the University of Bologna, a position he held until his death. In 1635, he wrote "Geometry of the Continuum by the Indivisibles", in which he applied the method of indivisibles to area calculation problems, but because he lacked a strict definition of "indivisibles", he invited criticism from P. Guldin (1577-1643). However, this method was a powerful discovery method and can be considered a precursor to modern integral calculus. Cavalieri |
