[Died] November 7, 1990. Montreal. Canadian novelist and essayist. Studied at Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar, and received his doctorate from Princeton University in 1935. Professor of English Literature at McGill University from 1951 to 1963. He made his debut with Barometer Rising (1941), and his second novel, Two Solitudes (1945), quickly established him as a representative British-Canadian writer. He continued to explore the theme of what Canada is in novels such as The Precipice (1948), Each Man's Son (1951), The Watch That Ends the Night (1959), and Return of the Sphinx (1967). The Seven Rivers of Canada (1961) is an excellent historical travelogue.

McLennan
McLennan, John Ferguson

Died: June 16, 1881. Kent. Scottish social anthropologist. After graduating from Cambridge University, he worked as a lawyer from 1857. In 1871, he was drafter of the Scottish Parliamentary Act. He studied primitive families and legal systems in relation to matriarchy and patriarchy, and was the first to use the terms exogamy and endogamy. He also presented the theory of polyandry and the theory of totem origins (→ totemism), and was one of the pioneers in comparative anthropological research into the origins of marriage and religious systems. His main works are Primitive Marriage (1865) and "The Patriarchal Theory" (85).

スコットランドの社会人類学者。ケンブリッジ大学卒業後，1857年より弁護士として活躍。 71年にはスコットランドの議事法起草者となった。母権制，父権制に関して原始時代の家族や法律制度を研究し，外婚制，内婚制の用語を初めて使用した。また，一妻多夫婚説やトーテム起源説 (→トーテミズム ) を発表，婚姻や宗教制度の起源を比較人類学的に研究した先駆者の一人。主著『原始婚姻』 Primitive Marriage (1865) ，"The Patriarchal Theory" (85) 。
