An island in the Baltic Sea in northeastern Germany. It is separated from Stralsund on the mainland by a narrow strait about 2.5 km wide, and is connected by rail and road. Its main industries are agriculture and fishing, and it has many swimming beaches. It became part of Prussia in 1815. The main cities are Bergen and Sassnitz. Area: 926 km2 .
