Substances that produce a sweet taste include inorganic salts such as lead acetate, D-amino acids, hydrophilic L-amino acids such as L-glycine and L-alanine, the dipeptide aspartame, and sugars such as fructose, glucose, and sucrose. Stevioside, a glycoside contained in the native plant stevia in Paraguay, South America, is also sweet, and is cultivated and extracted domestically as a substitute for artificial sweeteners.
