The Chibcha (also called Muisca) people of the Andean highlands, centered around the Bogotá plateau, were the most highly cultured of the eight tribes with different languages. (See Chibcha.) In 1499, Alonso de Ojeda became the first Spaniard to set foot on Colombian soil, and in 1509 the Spanish conquest began.

In 1538, Jimenez de Quesada founded the city of Santa Fe de Bogotá on land that had been the capital of the Chibcha people, and from then on, colonization began with the development of gold mines, with Bogotá as its center.
