The term "solar magnetograph" is used to refer to a device that measures the amount of polarization of spectral lines caused by the Zeeman effect, and is used to determine the solar magnetic field. The combination of a polarimeter and a spectrometer, or a polarizing filter (Lyot filter), has been attempted to be developed since the discovery of the magnetic field of sunspots, but with the advancement of electronic technology, it was first put to practical use in 1953 by H. W. Babcock (1912- ) at the Mount Wilson Observatory. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
