A Zionist educator who advocated cooperation between Jews and Arabs. Born in San Francisco to Jewish immigrants. After studying at universities in the United States and Germany, he became a Jewish rabbi in New York and at the same time became involved in the Zionist movement. He emigrated to Palestine in 1922 and helped establish Hebrew University, becoming its first president. After the Palestinian Arab riots of 1929, based on his pacifist beliefs, he advocated the establishment of a two-ethnic state in Palestine where Jews and Arabs could coexist, and launched a movement against the proposal to partition Palestine, but was not accepted into the Zionist mainstream.

ユダヤ人とアラブとの協調を説いたシオニスト教育者。ユダヤ移民の子としてサンフランシスコに生まれる。アメリカとドイツの大学で学んだ後，ニューヨークでユダヤ教のラビ(導師)となり，同時にシオニズム運動に挺身。1922年にパレスティナに移住し，ヘブライ大学の創立に力を尽くし，その初代総長となる。29年のパレスティナ･アラブの暴動後，その平和主義的信念からパレスティナにおけるユダヤ人とアラブとの2民族共存国家の樹立を説き，パレスティナ分割案に反対する運動を興したが，シオニスト主流派にはいれられなかった。
