Kuwaki Genyoku - Kuwaki Genyoku

Japanese:
Kuwaki Genyoku - Kuwaki Genyoku

Philosopher. Born in Ushigome, Tokyo, as the eldest son of a samurai of the former Kanazawa domain. Graduated from the Department of Philosophy at the Imperial University in 1896 (Meiji 29), he became a professor at the First Higher School. His "An Introduction to Philosophy" (1900) was the first introductory book on philosophy written by a Japanese. In 1906 (Meiji 39), he became a professor at Kyoto Imperial University, and after studying in Europe, he became a professor at Tokyo Imperial University in 1914 (Taisho 3). From then until his retirement in 1935 (Showa 10), he headed the philosophy department at the university for a long time, and was praised on a par with Nishida Kitaro of Kyoto University and Takahashi Satomi of Tohoku Imperial University. During that time, he also had a deep interest in social issues, and made many statements from a culturalist perspective, such as being a member of the Reimeikai Society and the Materialism Research Society. After World War II, he was elected to the House of Peers. Amid a trend in academic circles at the time to interpret Kant as mysterious and profound, he early on gained insight into the meaning of Kant's epistemology, for example, understanding "things in themselves" not as metaphysical entities or absolute beings but as "values," and he carried out serious research into this in works such as Kant and Modern Philosophy (1917).
