The main structure is the same as that of a reciprocating compressor, but the low vacuum type (1 to 3 kPa in one stage) is an automatic valve type (free valve type), while the high vacuum type (300 to 500 Pa in one stage) is a passive valve type (slide valve type). The automatic valve type uses plate valves for both the suction valve and discharge valve, while the passive valve type has a slide valve on the side of the cylinder that slides back and forth with a certain phase difference with the piston. The cylinder and valve chamber are often cooled by running cooling water through a water jacket. Some types have two stages in series to lower the ultimate pressure.
