A Meiji-era balloon developer. Born in Wakayama. In 1900, he invented a light balloon, which he called the "Japanese-style balloon," and in 1903, in cooperation with the army, developed a tethered balloon in Takanawa, Tokyo, which was used in the attack on Port Arthur fortress during the Russo-Japanese War that began the following year. In 1907, he attached a thruster to a balloon, called it the "Yamada-style air safety airplane," and established a balloon manufacturing plant in Osaki, Tokyo. In 1912, he succeeded in flying it over Tokyo Bay.

明治期の飛行気球開発者。和歌山に生まれる。明治33(1900)年に軽気球を発明し,「日本式気球」と称し,36年には東京高輪で陸軍と協力して繋留気球を開発,この繋留気球は翌年から始まった日露戦争の旅順要塞の攻撃に際して利用された。42年には気球に推進器を付けて「山田式空中安全飛行機」と称し,東京大崎に気球製作所を設立した。45年には東京湾上を飛行することに成功した。
