Tomochika Kawakita

A Japanese mathematician from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. Born in Edo. Studied under Okayu Yasumoto and Uchida Gokan and mastered the Seki school. After the Meiji Restoration, he studied Western studies at Shizuoka Gakumonsho, and in 1874 became an instructor at the Army Academy. In 1887 he joined the Tokyo Mathematical Company. Although a Japanese mathematician, he worked hard to run the company on a par with Western mathematicians. In 1888 he founded the Mathematical Shoin, and in 1897 he founded the Mathematical Association, and had Ueno Kiyoshi, Nagasawa Kamenosuke and others translate and publish many Western books. He also wrote books on the history of Japanese mathematician, including "Shoden of the Mathematicians of Japan." 幕末明治期の和算家。江戸の生まれ。御粥安本,内田五観に師事して関流を修める。維新後は静岡学問所で洋学を学び,明治7(1874)年陸軍士官学校教官となる。10年東京数学会社に参加。和算家ながら洋算家に伍して会社の運営に尽力した。13年に数理書院,20年には数学協会を興し,上野清,長沢亀之助らに多数の洋書を翻訳出版させる。『本朝数学家小伝』ほか和算史に関する著書もある。その蔵書は東大に収蔵されている。<参考文献>日本学士院編『明治前日本数学史』5巻,『日本の数学100年史』上
