...Also, as science became more specialized around that time, specialized scientific journals were launched, including medical journals, and in the 19th century, general science journals could no longer serve as the forefront media for academic societies, and were reorganized around this time to communicate and enlighten the scientific community in addition to their function as specialized journals. Among these, Nature (first published in the UK in 1869) and Science continued to maintain their academic aspects, while Scientific American, first published in the US in 1845, took a purely educational stance and created the prototype for the popular science magazines that exist today.

Japan's first scientific journal was "Kagaku" (Science), published in 1931. It was modeled on the earlier "Nature" (its first editor-in-chief was Jun Ishihara) and had a strong academic journal flavor.

…The existence of helium on Earth was confirmed in 1895. In 1869 he founded the natural science journal Nature and was its editor for 50 years. In 1885 he became director of the South Kensington Astrophysical Observatory, and in 1913 he became director of the newly established Hill Observatory (now the Norman Lockyer Observatory). …
