Mountaineer. One of the pioneers of modern mountaineering in Japan. Born in Miyagi Prefecture. Graduated from Keio University. In September 1921, he was the first to climb the eastern ridge of the Eiger. In August 1925, he led a Japanese team to the summit of Alberta in the Canadian Rockies for the first time. He served as president of the Japanese Alpine Club twice, from 1944 to 1946 and from 1951 to 1955. In 1956, he led the Japanese team that successfully climbed Manaslu, and was selected as a Person of Cultural Merit in the same year.
