Founder of the Jacobite Church, a Syrian Monophysite church. Born in the upper Euphrates region. Became a monk and studied at the seminary in Nisibis. During the persecution of the Monophysites, he infiltrated Constantinople, where he was protected by Theodora, wife of Emperor Justinian, and was ordained Bishop of Edessa in 542. After that, disguised as a beggar, he traveled throughout Asia Minor, Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt, and other places for 35 years, ordaining many Monophysite priests and laying the foundations of the Jacobite church.

シリアの単性論派教会であるヤコブ派教会の設立者。ユーフラテス川上流地方の出身。修道士となり,ニシビスの神学校で学んだ。単性論派に対する弾圧のもとで,コンスタンティノープルに潜入し,ユスティニアヌス帝の皇妃テオドラの保護を受け,542年にエデッサ主教に叙階された。それ以後,乞食に身をやつして,小アジア,メソポタミア,シリア,エジプトなどの各地を35年にわたって歩き,多数の単性論派の司祭を叙任し,ヤコブ派教会の基盤を築いた。
