500-578 Founder of the Jacobite Church, a Syrian Monophysite church. Born in the upper Euphrates region. Became a monk and studied at the seminary in Nisibis. During the persecution of the Monophysites, he infiltrated Constantinople, where he was protected by Theodora, wife of Emperor Justinian, and was ordained Bishop of Edessa in 542. After that, disguised as a beggar, he traveled throughout Asia Minor, Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt, and other places for 35 years, ordaining many Monophysite priests and laying the foundations of the Jacobite church.
