This is a fishing method that uses a purse seine net to quickly cast a net around a school of fish and gradually catch them by tightening it from one end. Purse seine fishing is the most active fishing method, and is as important as bottom trawl fishing. The target fish are sardines, mackerel, horse mackerel, skipjack, and tuna, which tend to gather in schools, and the fishery is affected by the fluctuation of these resources, but in recent years, almost one-third of Japan's annual catch is made by purse seine fishing. There are various sizes and shapes, from relatively small ones that reel in fish such as gizzard shad, mullet, and sea bass in inland bays, to large ones with float lines of 1,500 to 1,600 meters long that target skipjack and tuna.
