Oligodynamics

…A small amount of metal dissolves in water, ionizes, and has a bactericidal effect. This is called oligodynamics, but metal salts are also known to have a fairly strong bactericidal effect and have been used since ancient times. A typical example is mercuric chloride (mercury chloride), whose composition was revealed in 1809 and whose bactericidal properties were recognized by Koch.
