A pass on the border between Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture and Kannami Town, Tagata County. Also called Jushu Pass or Higanesan, it is 774 meters above sea level. The Atami-Hakone Toge Line, a major regional road that connects Atami Pass and Hakone Pass, runs north and south along the western slope of Jukoku Pass (Higanesan), and a cable car reaches the summit, so it is a popular tourist destination. The gently sloping grassland area around the summit is made of andesite lava from the Yugahara volcano, and the view stretches across 10 countries and 5 islands, hence the name. These include the 10 provinces of Sagami, Musashi, Kazusa, Shimousa, Awa, Suruga, Totomi, Shinano, Kai, and Izu, and the 5 islands of Oshima, Niijima, Kozushima, Miyakejima, and Shikinejima. There is a monument bearing a poem by Minamoto no Sanetomo, "When I cross the Hakone road, I see the waves rising in the sea of Izu and the small islands offshore," written on his pilgrimage to the two shrines of Hakone Gongen and Izuyama Gongen. To the east is Hikaneyama Tokoji Temple. It takes about 35 minutes by bus from Atami Station to Jikkoku Toge Noboriguchi Station, and then a cable car to the top. There is also a hiking trail to the top of the mountain. [Kitagawa Mitsuo] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
