1891‐1959 Soviet writer. Graduated from the Faculty of Law at Moscow University. Served in World War I and the Civil War. In 1911 he published Futurist-style poetry, and in the mid-1920s he entered the literary world with novellas romanticizing episodes from the revolution and Civil War, such as The Wind (1924) and The Forty-First (1926; the basis for the film Malyutka). His next work, the play Shattered (premiered in 1927 at the Vakhtangov Theatre), depicted a mutiny by sailors on the cruiser Aurora, and was hailed as a new type of revolutionary heroic drama.
