Native people of North and South America. Anthropologically, it refers to all ethnic groups excluding the Eskimo and Aleut, but in general it may include them. In Japan, it is common to call the native people of North America American Indians and the native people of Central and South America Indios. The term Indios comes from the fact that when Columbus discovered the New World, he believed it to be the Indies and wrote Indios in his report to the King of Spain. They are also called Amerindians or Amerinds. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
