Shigeya Ohara - Ohara Jusai

Japanese: 小原重哉 - おはらじゅうさい

1836-1902 A samurai and bureaucrat from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period.
Born in 1832. A samurai of the Okayama Domain in Bizen. He participated in the anti-foreign movement with Fujimoto Tesseki and others. In 1868, he assassinated Matsuyama Ikunosuke of the Shinsengumi and was imprisoned. After the Meiji Restoration, he became a judge in the Ministry of Justice and worked to revise the Prison Law. He later served as Deputy Director of the Prison Bureau of the Ministry of Home Affairs, a member of the House of Councillors, and a member of the House of Peers. He died on May 28, 1892. He was 67 years old. His childhood name was Sumitaro. His pen name was Beika. His given name can also be read as Shigeya.

天保(てんぽう)7年生まれ。備前岡山藩士。藤本鉄石らと攘夷(じょうい)運動を展開。元治元年新選組の松山幾之助を暗殺して投獄される。維新後,司法省判事となり監獄法改正につくす。のち内務省監獄局次長,元老院議官,貴族院議員などを歴任。明治35年5月28日死去。67歳。幼名は澄太郎。号は米華。名は「しげや」ともよむ。
