Born: November 13, 1888 in Sendai, Miyagi [Died] December 4, 1957. Tokyo novelist. He dropped out of middle school and moved to Tokyo in 1905 to study under Tokutomi Roka. He went to the United States in 1907, where he worked and wrote novels and critiques in his spare time. He returned to Japan in 1920. He worked as an editor for the magazine Chugai, and published the masterpiece of early proletarian literature, Third Class Passenger (1921), which caused a sensation in the literary world. In 1923, he became a member of the literary magazine Tane Maku Hito (The Sower), and subsequently published Red Carriage (1923) and Pan (1923). The following year, in 1924, he became a member of the Bungei Sensen (Bungei Sensen) and, while writing critiques, published the long novel Daibōfuu Jidai (The Great Stormy Age) (1924), becoming a representative writer of early proletarian literature. His other works include the collection of essays Ten Years (1930) and the biographical work Rokaden (1938).
