A river port city in the western Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located about 100 km from the mouth of the Congo River and about 300 km southwest of Kinshasa. It exports timber, bananas, coffee, cocoa, etc. A railway runs to Tschehera in the north. It has been the center of the slave trade since the 18th century, and was the capital of the Belgian Congo until 1926. It has a population of 171,000 (2004).
