Takashina Takakane

Japanese:
Takashina Takakane
Years of birth: unknown. Painter of the Imperial Court Painting Office in the late Kamakura period. Ukon-dayu no Shogen. Marked an era as a court painter under Emperor Go-Fushimi and Emperor Hanazono. Records can be traced from 1309 to 1330, including the coloring of the Hiyoshi Shrine portable shrine donated by Go-Fushimi-in (1315), the "Aizen Myoo statue" (1321) ordered by Emperor Hanazono, and a copy of the "Kamo Festival Scroll" by Fujiwara no Tamenobu (1330). Definitive works include the Imperial Treasure "Kasuga Gongen Miracle Record" (1309, Imperial Household Agency) and "Kasuga Kagemuko-zu" (1312, Fujita Museum of Art). The former is a dignified and highly accomplished work that revives the tradition of Yamato-e painting from the time of Heian-period painter Tokiwa Mitsunaga, using bright colors and light, rhythmic lines. Extant works by Takakane himself or in his style include the 12 volumes of the "Xuanzang Tripitaka Illustrated Scroll" (owned by the Fujita Museum of Art), the 7 volumes of the "Ishiyama-dera Engi Illustrated Scroll" at Ishiyama-dera (volumes 1-3 of which were written by Takakane), and the "Yata Jizo Engi Illustrated Scroll" (2 volumes) at Yata-dera in Kyoto. There are also other examples in the same style, such as the "Eshi Zoushi" (owned by the Tokyo National Museum) and the "Nayotake Monogatari Illustrated Scroll" (owned by Kotohira Shrine), and his influence continued until around the middle of the Northern and Southern Dynasties. His successor was Takatsugu, who served as the next court painter at the Imperial Painting Studio.
