1877‐1952 Austrian geographer. Studied under A. Penck and E. Suss. After teaching at the University of Basel in Switzerland and the University of Freiburg in Germany, he became a professor at the University of Vienna for 20 years from 1931. After World War II, he established a committee for applied regional studies and reconstruction at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and as one of Europe's leading geographers, he made a major contribution to the development of geography in the first half of the 20th century.
