A Chinese politician in the mid-Eastern Jin Dynasty. His courtesy name was Anshi. He was from a noble family in Yangxia, Chen County (Henan Province). He first served at the age of 40 in a manor in Kuaiji (Zhejiang Province) with Wang Xizhi and others, and served as Minister of the Secretariat, Situ, and Taibo. He was generous and insightful, and worked to establish order in the country with a long-term perspective. He used strategies to prevent the usurpation of the warlord Huan Wen, and used his nephew Xie Xuan to repel the large army of Former Qin's Fu Jian in the Battle of Feishui, thus establishing the Eastern Jin Dynasty. He was also a cultural leader who excelled in music, cursive writing, and refined conversation, and his high-minded nature earned him the respect of an "elegant prime minister," and he was seen as a model minister in later generations.
