A renga master from the early Muromachi period. His real name was Asayama Morotsuna, and he was also known as Asayama Bontoan. He was a successive retainer of the Ashikaga clan. He learned renga from Nijō Yoshimoto, and participated in Ishiyama Hyakuin in 1385 (Genchū 2/Shitoku 2). He became a monk in his mid-40s. He traveled the Kyushu, Kanto, and Tohoku regions, and returned to Kyoto around age 60 on the orders of Ashikaga Yoshimochi. After the deaths of Shua and Yoshimoto, he became the center of the renga world, and served as a bridge to the Seven Sages period, when Sozei and Shinkei were active. He is known for his witty poems, such as "Flowers pass by, maples turn, plum rain falls" (Sōzei, Shōshin Kyūeishu).

室町前期の連歌師。俗名は朝山師綱（もろつな）。朝山梵灯庵ともいう。歴代足利氏の家臣。連歌を二条良基（よしもと）に学び，1385年(元中2∥至徳2)《石山百韻》に参加。40歳代半ばに出家。九州，関東，東北地方に行脚，60歳前後に足利義持の命で帰洛。周阿･良基亡きあと連歌界の中心となり，次の宗砌（そうぜい）･心敬（しんけい）らが活躍する七賢時代への橋渡し役をなした。〈花に過ぎもみぢにとをし梅の雨〉(宗砌《初心求詠集》)など機知の句が多い。
