Punishment in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. This word appears in the prohibitions on battlefields issued by Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and stipulates that anyone who commits acts of violence or disorder should be punished by "cutting one sen." There are two theories about the content of this law since the Edo period. One is the theory of Arai Hakuseki, which says that it meant that even stealing one sen, or one mon, would be punished by death. The other is the theory of Ise Sadatake, which understands that "kiri" means limit, and that when fines are collected, even one sen is searched for and all assets are confiscated. Even today, it is unclear which version is correct, but from the Sengoku period to the Azuchi-Momoyama period, a strict punishment policy was seen under the wartime system, and such punishments were foretold to maintain discipline, especially on the battlefield.
