A city in the mid-west of Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1982. It occupies a valley connecting the Fukuoka and Chikushi plains. It is the site of the ancient Dazaifu, and is a tourist destination with many historic sites and scenic spots, including the ruins of the Dazaifu, the Kokubunji ruins (historic site), Kanzeonji temple, and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. It is served by the Nishitetsu Tenjin-Omuta Line, the Dazaifu Line, and the Kyushu Expressway, and in recent years has developed into a satellite city of Fukuoka City. There are many higher education institutions, including Chikushi Jogakuen University. The Kyushu National Museum opened in October 2005. 29.60 km2 .
