...HTN Gaitskell, the party leader, supported by the block votes of the major unions, fought off several challenges over welfare and rearmament from A. Bevan's faction, which was based in local branches, but his attempt to abolish the socialist platform (Article 4) in order to reform the party's character as a class party was defeated by opposition from the unions. James Harold Wilson (1916-1995), who became the new party leader in 1963, put forward a vision of modernization that emphasized new industrial technology, and in 1964, he returned the Labour Party to power. He promised to raise welfare standards in a high-growth economy with the participation of the state, and positioned himself as the party of technocrats to manage it, but in the low-growth economy that he inherited, he was hit by a foreign currency crisis, switched to a deflationary policy, and was defeated in the general election in 1970. ...
