Villafranca fauna - Villafranca fauna

Villafranca fauna - Villafranca fauna
A general term for a group of terrestrial fossil mammals found in late Pliocene to early Pleistocene strata in central and southern to eastern Europe (up to the Sea of Azov region). The name is derived from the name of the strata whose type locality is Villafranca d'Asti in northern Italy. This group represents a transitional period from warm forest-type Tertiary mammals to cold grassland-type Quaternary mammals, and compared to earlier mammal groups, the composition of the group has undergone major changes, such as the replacement of the ancient three-toed Hipparion by the one-toed horse (Equus) and the forest elephant mastodon by the grassland elephant Elephas.
