Columbiformes, family Pigeonidae. Total length 43cm. Endemic to the Ogasawara Islands, it became extinct before 1900. There are only three specimens in existence in the world, one each in the Zoological Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Russia, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum in Germany, and the Natural History Museum in London in the UK. The whole body is slate black, with a strong purple-green metallic sheen on the head and back. It resembles the Japanese wood pigeon, which is common on Japanese islands, but is slightly larger and has a stronger green sheen. It was collected on Chichijima and Nakodojima, and the last specimen was collected on Nakodojima in 1889. Nothing is known about its ecology.
