Umemodoki - Japanese plum imitation

Japanese: ウメモドキ - うめもどき
Umemodoki - Japanese plum imitation

A deciduous shrub of the family Ilex (APG classification: Ilex family). It is 5 meters tall, has gray-brown bark, and young branches are densely covered with short hairs. The leaves are elliptical, 3-8 cm long, wrinkled, sharply pointed, with fine serrations, and hairy on both sides. Young branches and leaves without hairs are sometimes distinguished as a variant of Inuumemodoki. Flowers appear in June in axilic cymes, about 5 mm in diameter, pale purple, tetramerous or pentamerous. Dioecious. The fruit is a drupe that ripens red and remains on the branches from winter to early spring, looking like a red plum flower, hence the name. It grows in mountain wetlands and is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The variety with yellow ripening fruit is called Kiminoumemodoki, and the variety with white ripening fruit is called Shiroumemodoki.
