Universal gained a good reputation with the masterpiece All Quiet on the Western Front (1930, directed by Lewis Milestone), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director in 1929-30. Universal went on to produce hits with horror films such as Dracula (1931), directed by Tod Browning (1882-1962) and starring Bela Lugosi (1882-1956), and Frankenstein (1931), directed by James Whale and starring Boris Karloff (1887-1969) (see also the entry on horror films). However, the company ran into financial difficulties in the mid-1930s due to the worldwide economic depression, and Laemmle was forced to resign in 1936.
