A history book compiled by the shogunate in the early Edo period. A general history of Japan from the Age of the Gods to Emperor Goyozei. It is modeled on the name and writing style of the Chinese "Zizhi Tongjian." The main volume (originally called "Honcho Henenroku") was compiled by Hayashi Razan at the command of the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, and consists of 40 volumes covering the reigns of Emperors Jinmu to Uda. The sequel was completed in 1670 (Kanbun 10) by Hayashi Gaho at the command of the fourth shogun, Ietsuna, and consists of 230 volumes covering the reigns of Emperors Daigo to Goyozei. There are also two volumes of the first part, three volumes of the first part, 30 volumes of summaries, and five volumes of appendices, for a total of 310 volumes. The building used for the compilation is the "Kokushikan" (National History Museum), and the diary is the "Kokushikan Nikki" (National History Museum Diary). It is a chronology of each emperor's reign, and records the facts as they are, with the hope of promoting good and punishing evil. It is inferior to the Dai Nihonshi in that it does not cite the sources of the articles, but it is a valuable historical work that contains many documented records that are now lost. The theory that this work contains a description of the ancestor of our imperial family as Taibo of Wu (Nenzan Kibun by Ando Tameaki) is a misrepresentation. Published by the Kokusho Kankokai in 18 volumes (1918-20).
