A medieval and early modern samurai family from Musashi. It is said that the family began when Mitsumoto, the son of Ariga Heitaro Yoriki, a member of the ruling party of the Musashi Seven, lived in Tagaya, Saitama County, Musashi Province, and called himself Tagaya Jiro. It is also said that the family began with Iemasa, the son of Kaneko Juro Ietada, also of the Murayama party. They became retainers of the Kamakura Shogunate, and in the Muromachi and Sengoku periods, they became retainers of the Yuki clan of Shimousa. After the Battle of Yuki, Ujiie assisted his lord, Yuki Shigetomo, and made a great contribution to the restoration of the clan, and based himself in Shimotsuma Castle in Hitachi. His descendants were important vassals of the Yuki clan, and in times of political and economic struggle, they allied with Satake Yoshishige of Hitachi Ota Castle to counter the advance of the Hojo clan, and in 1576 (Tensho 4), they defeated the troops of Hojo Ujimasa.
