Honmachi Street - Main Street

Honmachi Street - Main Street

A full-length novel by American author H.S. Lewis. Published in 1920. Carol, a college-educated intellectual woman, becomes the wife of Kennicott, the town doctor of Gopher Pleasure, a fictional rural town in the American Midwest, and embarks on cultural reform in the town, attempting things like staging plays. She criticizes the narrow-mindedness and self-righteousness of the townspeople, but in return, they criticize her for her frivolous, city-like ways. She temporarily separates from her husband and leaves the town, but is unable to fully commit to being a reformer, and in the end, she reconciles with her husband and settles for life in the country. The author's mixed feelings of repulsion and attachment to her hometown, born from her experience of city life, became the creative energy behind this work, and as a controversial work that satirizes the backwardness of American culture, which Americans at the time were forced to reflect on, it aroused an unprecedented response in the history of American literature.
