The central city of the northern part of Israel. It is located about 30 km east-southeast of Haifa on the Mediterranean coast, on a hill facing the Valley of Esdraelon, at the southern end of the lowlands of Galilee. It first appeared in the New Testament as the town where Jesus Christ spent his childhood, and flourished as a center of Christianity. It subsequently experienced periods of ups and downs under the rule of Arabs, Crusaders, and Turks, but in 1948 it came under Israeli rule. It has many Christian historical sites, such as the Basilica of the Annunciation, and is a distribution center for agricultural products such as fruits and vegetables. The neighboring city of Nazareth-Rit to the east of the town, which was built in 1957, is also home to industries such as food processing, textiles, and automobile assembly. Population: 64,600 (2006 estimate). Nazareth |
