The capital of Guadeloupe, an overseas department of France, is located in the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean Sea. It has a population of 14,107 (1990). It is a French colonial-style town located at the foot of Grand Soufrière Mountain, on the southwestern tip of Basse-Terre Island, one of the two islands that make up Guadeloupe. It is blessed with beautiful views of the sea and mountains, along with the city of St. Claude, which is home to a village of the Matsuba Indians, slightly above the foot of the mountain, which is covered with beautiful tropical forests.
