Honseiji Temple

Japanese: 本誓寺 - ほんせいじ
Honseiji Temple
This Otani-ha Shinshu temple is located in Teramachi, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kasaharayama. It was founded in Shimousa by Kyonen Fukawa, a disciple of Shinran, and moved to Shinshu during the time of the 7th abbot, Shojun, where it was called Kasahara Honsei-ji. It is one of the so-called Isobe Rokku-ji temples that were established in Shinano by the Kanto Zensei-based religious organization. In 1558 (Eiroku 1), it moved to Kasugayama Castle at the request of the Uesugi clan. The Honsei-ji-ki records that in 1553 (Tenbun 22), Uesugi Kenshin sent the 10th abbot, Choken, to Kaga to request a route guarantee for his journey to Kyoto, and that he sent a large number of men and military supplies to Hongan-ji during the Ishiyama War.

Honseiji Temple

This is a Shinshu Otani sect temple in Matto, Ishikawa Prefecture. Its mountain name is Sakamotoyama. It is commonly known as Matto Honsei-ji. According to temple legend, it was founded by Taicho during the Yoro era (717-724) and originally belonged to the Tendai sect as a shrine temple of Mt. Hakusan. The founder is said to be Ensei, who is said to have converted to Shinran on his way to Echigo. In the early days of the Ikko Ikki uprising, the temple seems to have had a connection with Kokyo-ji Temple in Yamada, Enuma County, and the temple has a statue of the Seven Ancestors that was given to Kokyo-ji Temple by Rennyo. In the Kyoroku Disturbance (Kaga Ikko Ikki uprising) that occurred in 1531 (4th year of the Kyoroku era), the temple fought alongside Kokyo-ji Temple and others and was expelled, but later welcomed the lord of Matto Castle, Kaburagi Yorinobu, as the chief priest and acted under Echizen Wada Honkaku-ji Temple.
